Notes

  • Pick the right wrappers: As we need to air fry the wontons, we use thick square wrappers. Super thin ones like the ones for su mai will burn within minutes. I prefer wonton wrappers to make these. Make a choice between wrappers with egg or without based on preference. Also keep the folded wontons covered at all times to keep them from drying.
  • Prepping the cream cheese: We require the cream cheese to be at room temperature. To do so, simply pop the cream cheese in the microwave for 20 seconds and use.
  • Folding: There is no right or wrong way to fold the wontons. There are plenty of methods to fold them effectively. Pick the one that you find easy. Secure the edges well so the filling does not leak.
  • Sealing: The wontons are easy to seal with either water or egg wash. Make a choice depending on dietary preferences. Ensure the seal is tight.
  • Adding spice to the recipe: It is easy to add spice to the wontons. Add diced jalapeños, Thai chili or just chili flakes to the filling mix.
  • Do not overcrowd the basket: It is best to leave some space between the wontons before air frying. That way they do not stick to each and neither does the filling stick to other wontons.
  • Alternates to air frying: If you do not have an air fryer, it is also easy to bake or deep fry the wontons. Simply use the method that works best for you.
Air Fryer: Remember to always account for the time needed for the Air Fryer to preheat. The cook time listed does not account for this.
