Light and crisp on the outside, and filled with a creamy soft cheese filling; these Cream Cheese Wontons are a must-try!
We use the air fryer to make them quickly, easily and with minimal ingredients. Yet there is no compromise on the taste and texture and these are definitely better than the Asian buffets.
Asian recipes are our favorite for meals. These are easy to make, delicious and perfect for meal prep as well. While authentic Asian dishes are great, cuisines that take inspiration from Asian dishes are popular as well. These include Asian Indian or Indo-Chinese recipes and Asian American recipes to name a couple.
Sushi, Kung Pao recipes, Pad Thai, General Tso's recipes, Poke Bowls, lettuce wraps, Chowmein and Fried Rice are popular American Asian recipes.
These recipes have the base from Asian cuisine but are modified to suit the America taste buds. And yes, now these have spread to other countries as well. Indian Asian favorites include Chinese Bhel, Manchurian, Hakka Noodles and so on.

What are Wontons
Asian cuisine is rich in parcels that are made with a skin and filled with variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian fillings. These together are commonly called 'dumplings'.
Potstickers, wontons, gyoza, siu mai etc. are all kinds of dumplings based on the shape and the covering used.
Today I am sharing a wonton recipe that starts off with wrappers from the Asian cuisine but the process and filling in it is completely American. This fusion recipe is popular in American restaurants and is super easy to make at home!
Why this recipe works
- It is super easy to make in the air fryer.
- We only need a handful of easy to find ingredients.
- These can be prepped ahead of time, making them perfect for any party!
- We can custom make the filling based on spice tolerance and flavor expectations.
- These are definitely super addictive.
- The recipe only needs a few minutes of active time.
- These cream cheese wontons are great as an appetizer with a variety of dipping sauces.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Wonton Wrappers: The base of the recipe is wonton wrappers. These are easy to find in the refrigerated aisle of most Asian stores. Pick thick square ones so they can be folded into the shape we desire and do not tear on air frying.
- Cream Cheese: Regular plain cream cheese is best for the recipe. However, use a flavored one if you like. Ensure it is at room temperature so it can be whipped with the spices and green onions. It is easy to microwave it for 20 seconds to bring it to the right texture.
- Green Onions: A perfect ingredient to add crunch to the cream cheese filling is finely chopped green onions. The green part of scallions works perfectly here. Moreover, chives or other fresh herbs can be used too.
- Spices: The spices we use for the recipe includes salt, pepper and garlic powder. These are great to season the wontons.
- Apart from these, we use water to seal the edges of wontons and oil or non-stick spray to air fry the cream cheese wontons.

Expert Tips and Notes
- Pick the right wrappers: As we need to air fry the wontons, we use thick square wrappers. Super thin ones like the ones for su mai will burn within minutes. I prefer wonton wrappers to make these. Make a choice between wrappers with egg or without based on preference. Also keep the folded wontons covered at all times to keep them from drying.
- Prepping the cream cheese: We require the cream cheese to be at room temperature. To do so, simply pop the cream cheese in the microwave for 20 seconds and use.
- Folding: There is no right or wrong way to fold the wontons. There are plenty of methods to fold them effectively. Pick the one that you find easy. Secure the edges well so the filling does not leak.
- Sealing: The wontons are easy to seal with either water or egg wash. Make a choice depending on dietary preferences. Ensure the seal is tight.
- Adding spice to the recipe: It is easy to add spice to the wontons. Simply add diced jalapeños, Thai chili or just chili flakes to the filling mix.
- Do not overcrowd the basket: It is best to leave some space between the wontons before air frying. That way they do not stick to each and neither does the filling stick to other wontons.
- Alternates to air frying: If you do not have an air fryer, it is also easy to bake or deep fry the wontons. Simply use the method that works best for you.
Serving
These cream cheese wontons are perfect as an appetizer. They pair well with various sweet and spicy sauces. I like to serve these with sweet chili sauce, peanut sauce and schezwan sauce.
It is easy to wrap these and set them in the refrigerator before hand. Then simply air fry and serve with your favorite sauce as an appetizer.
