What is Rose Peda?
As the name suggests; these are pedas made with rose flavor. They have the color, taste and flavor of rose thanks to a few delicious ingredients.
Infusing milk powder and condensed milk with rose syrup makes these pedas bright colored and super flavorful.
Rose has been my favorite flavor since childhood. Ice creams, shakes, falooda and sweets. The flavors of rose along with the pink color is my favorite.
I started using rose in peda and other sweets and have been a fan since. Not just me, my family and my friends have loved it. They get the first taste of the recipes and I always love their honest feedback!
Why this recipe works
- These pedas are super easy to make with only a handful of ingredients. They do need a few basic ingredients but the others can be eliminated or substituted very easily.
- This recipe makes super fudgy pedas with a signature top. The striking difference between barfi and peda is this top and we nail it using this recipe!
- I like to shape my pedas with a rose shaped mooncake mold to make them chic! However, they can be round or any shape you like too. But making them like roses is definitely a game changer.
- These easy to make pedas come together in 15 minutes. Just a few steps and you have a bowl full of pedas to enjoy immediately!
- These make the perfect hostess gift or sweet for a party. Plus, they are fasting friendly and make a great sweet for any kind of puja too.
I have made these rose pedas several times and they have been amazing. I would strongly urge you to try these to believe!
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Milk Powder: An important ingredient in this recipe, I have used full fat milk powder in the recipe. It is shelf stable and a great ingredient to have at hand for quick sweet recipes. It does not have any flavoring so it is easy to use it with different flavors in sweets and other recipes.
- These rose pedas can be made with milk too. It is a super long process and requires a lot of time. Using milk powder is an easy and effective way of making these pedas.
- Condensed Milk: I like to use Sweetened condensed milk to speed up the process of making pedas. Sugar can be used in the recipe too, but it increases the cooking time.
- Rose Syrup: Rose pedas need rose flavoring for sure. Store bought rose syrup is perfect for the recipe. Indian stores sell these syrup in bottles and I always have one in my pantry.
- Cardamom Powder: In order to add another layer of flavor and some texture I have added cardamom powder to the pedas. Nutmeg powder is a great addition too.
- Ghee: Ghee is a required ingredient in the recipe. I like to add ghee in two parts, first to cook the mawa powder and condensed milk and the rest to add gloss towards the end of the recipe.
- Adding nuts, dried rose petals or some rose extract works well too.
See the recipe card for detailed ingredient information, measurements and nutrition.
How to make this recipe
1- In a pan add ghee and heat it.
2- Add the milk (mawa) powder to it.
3- Add in sweetened condensed milk and stir. Let the mix cook till it thickens. Keep stirring intermittently so it does not stick.
4- Once the mixture starts to thicken, add the rose syrup and mix.
5- The mixture will thicken further on cooking.
6- Add the cardamom powder and remaining ghee. Mix well.
7- Once the mix begins to leave the sides of the pan, turn down the flame. Keep turning the mix to cool it down quickly.
8- Once the mix cools down completely, divide it into equal sized balls.
9- Press one ball into a mooncake press and make the peda on a cookie mat.
10- Make the pedas till all the mix is used up.
11- Let the pedas remain uncovered for 10 minutes so they dry enough and have the signature dry top.
12- Transfer to an airtight container or enjoy straight from the cookie sheet!
Expert Tips and Notes
- Make sure the milk powder is not very old. Old mawa powder tends to make the pedas stale. If in doubt, lightly dry roast the powder before using in the recipe.
- Rose syrup is easily available in Indian stores. These are great for the bright color, flavor and taste. However, any brand of rose syrup that is available on Amazon can be used too.
- If you cannot find rose syrup, add some edible pink color and rose essense to replicate the flavors.
- Turn down the heat immediately once the mixture thickens. Cooking it further will yield chewy pedas.
- While using a mooncake mold makes the pedas chis, they can be made into simple rounds and enjoyed too.
Recipe FAQs
These pedas use a handful of ingredients. Milk powder (mawa powder), sweetened condensed milk and rose syrup are the primary ingredients here.
I like to shape mine using a mooncake mold fitted with a rose shaped mold. However these pedas can be shaped as simple rounds too.
Like most peda recipes, we need to refrigerate these. They are great for about two weeks in the refrigerator.

Hiya, can I use sugar instead?
Smruti says
Hey. Yes sugar works as well. Simply add it with the milk powder to make sure it melts well.

I want to try this recipe. What is the proportion of rose water or essence to use if I don’t have the syrup? Thanks!
Smruti says
Hi Roshni
Use about 1/2 tsp of rose water or 2-3 drops of rose essence in place of the syrup. That will work well.
